The Impact of Social Media on Studies and Mental Health

Social media can be a double-edged sword for students:

  • Distraction from Studies: Endless scrolling can eat away precious study time, diminishing productivity and affecting academic progress.
  • Mental Health Effects: Constant exposure to curated content can sometimes lead to comparison, stress, or feelings of inadequacy.
  • Reduced Focus and Clarity: Switching between study tasks and social media reduces attention span and interrupts cognitive flow, making it harder to retain information.

Acknowledging these effects, Vidhi Jain devised a strategy to use social media constructively, keeping her focus on her CA studies while staying connected.

Vidhi Jain’s Social Media Management Strategy

When asked by CA Ashish Kalra about her approach, Vidhi revealed that she hadn’t completely disconnected from social media.

Instead, she created boundaries that allowed her to use it in moderation, enhancing her mental balance without letting it interfere with her CA Inter study goals.

  1. Limited Screen Time: Vidhi chose not to deactivate her social media accounts, but she limited her screen time. She set a clear rule to ensure social media did not take away valuable hours. Instead of mindlessly browsing, she allocated a specific time each day.
  2. 45-Minute Relaxation Breaks: Vidhi allowed herself around 45 minutes daily on YouTube, usually during her meal times, to watch relaxing content. This way, she combined her breaks with a bit of screen time, reducing the urge to use social media outside of these intervals.
  3. Tracking Usage: To maintain discipline, Vidhi used the screen time feature on her phone to monitor her usage. This tool reminded her when she was nearing her set daily limit, helping her stay accountable.
  4. Priority on Studies: Vidhi’s focus was unwaveringly on her CA preparation. Social media was only a tool for relaxation and never a priority. This mindset kept her centered on her academic goals, treating social media merely as a small part of her daily routine rather than a focal point.
  5. Avoiding Distractions from Instagram: Recognizing Instagram’s tendency to pull users into endless scrolling, Vidhi refrained from opening it during study days. She minimized notifications and resisted the urge to check feeds regularly.
  6. Mental Refreshment: Vidhi’s approach to social media was conscious and strategic. By setting her own boundaries and treating social media as a light break, she avoided the emotional or mental strain that often accompanies prolonged online engagement.
