Is Word-to-Word Copying Needed in CA Foundation Exams?

A common doubt among CA Foundation students is whether they must write answers exactly in the same words as the ICAI Study Material or the notes given by their teachers, like Rishabh Gaur Sir. Let’s understand this clearly.

Word-to-Word Copying Needed in CA Exams? – Short Answer

The short answer is: No, it is not compulsory to copy word-to-word, but it is important to match the essence, concepts, and keywords. When you write your own language but maintain the correct grammar and properly use technical keywords, you will get full marks.

How will the Examiner Check Your Answers?

For example, imagine a question where a product is kept on a shelf in a store, and you pick it up. The law says you have not purchased it yet; it is merely an Invitation to Offer.

Now, whether you use slightly different sentences to explain this situation doesn’t matter, but you must mention the keyword “Invitation to Offer.”

Similarly, a smart student may even link the case study, like Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain v. Boots Cash Chemist Ltd., which would make the answer even stronger.

However, even if you don’t mention the case law but have written the correct explanation and key terms, you will still get good marks.

The ICAI examiner is trained to check whether:

  • Your concept is correct.
  • The keywords are properly included.
  • Your language is grammatically correct and formal.

Even if your sentence structure is a little different from the Study Material, it is fine as long as the concept and keywords are clear. But, if you completely miss the important words or write a general story without legal terms, then marks will be deducted.

Pro Tip by Rishabh Gaur Sir:

When you practice answers, focus on identifying keywords. Wherever you read a concept, ask yourself, “What are the 2–3 words that must come into my answer?” Whether it is Offer, Acceptance, Consideration, Coercion, Undue Influence, or anything else — spotting and using these technical words is the key to success.
