WHY CA?

Chartered Accountancy Course is a course which is needed to be completed to become a Chartered Accountant (CA). A CA is a professional who is traditionally known for auditing the books of accounts of an organization. However, the scope of work of a CA has widened over time. Statutory audit report of companies can’t be signed by any person other than a CA. This makes us realize the importance of a CA’s signature. All stakeholders rely upon the Audit Report signed by a CA. 

In India, CA Course is provided solely by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, a statutory body set up by an act of the Indian Parliament on 1st July, 1949. Students have to pass through 3 levels to become a CA. These levels are Foundation, Intermediate and Final. 

A Chartered Accountant is considered as a very respected professional. Hence, most of the intelligent commerce students take Commerce Stream only to become a CA, while some decide to pursue CA Course afterwards. But before making any choice, let us understand why to become a CA. Some of the reasons why a student wants to become a CA are as follows:

  1. RESPECT – CA Course is a comprehensive course, imbibing all the areas of knowledge which a commerce professional should know. CAs are a well of knowledge. They are also the sole signing authority to the audit report of companies and some other statutory audits. Hence, CAs are respected all over the world. 
  2. FLEXIBILITY – The job of a CA is flexible. He has vast knowledge, which is why CAs can change their work profile. They can be employed in various firms, such as finance, consultancy, etc. They can be involved in taxation, audit, accounting, etc. They can also become entrepreneurs.
  3. GLOBAL CAREER OPPORTUNITIES – The Indian CAs can pursue CA Course in other countries too just by giving some additional papers This will ensure an international career for them. They can also be settled in countries which recognize Indian CAs as it is.
  4. SECURITY – There is job security for CAs because CAs are needed in every company, whether big or small. This makes CA profession recession – free. 
  5. EXTENSIVE LEARNING – Conventionally, CA is considered as a thing about numbers only. But this is not the truth. CAs also obtain the knowledge of finance, business, technical skills, etc. This makes CA Course an epitome of extensive learning. It also helps them work in any sector which they specialize in. 
  6. ATTRACTIVE SALARY PACKAGES – As compared to other commerce professionals, CAs get a better salary package. Initially, they get handsome salary package of approximately Rs.8 Lakhs – Rs.10 Lakhs. With experience, the package increases. The highest package initially has been Rs. 30 Lakhs. In case the CAs get hired by international companies, they can even get a package of Rs.75 Lakhs. 
  7. LESS COSTLY – As compared to other professional courses of commerce stream, CA is less costly and also provides higher returns. Even if one opts for private coaching for the preparation, the total cost would be around Rs. 3-4 Lakhs.
  8. CONTRIBUTION TO THE NATION – CAs are considered as a Partner in Nation Building by the Government of India. This is a matter of honour for all CAs and CA aspirants. CA is a profession in which the students get a chance to contribute to the nation by auditing the accounts correctly and helping the authorities track the faulty transactions. 

In addition to the above reason, there are several other reasons to pursue the CA profession. CA is also a foundation for being posted at higher positions such as Chairman of various banks, Governors of States, Finance Minister, CAG, etc. CA gives a base for these positions and we have seen various CAs being posted on these higher positions. 

While deciding whether or not to pursue, keep certain things in mind:

  • Opt for it only if it interests you.
  • You will have to dedicate 4-5 years of your life to it. Choose it based on your own capabilities.
  • Don’t choose CA under family pressure or just because your friend is choosing it.
